Popcorn Fun!

I had to share a fun experience with my two little beauties tonight.

Daddy is gone out of town to a conference.  Princess and Flossy talked me into popcorn and a movie.

I had saw a few weeks ago somewhere how to make "homemade" microwave popcorn.  The instructions sounded easy enough.  Put 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels in a paperbag.  Add 2 tsp oil to the kernels.  Roll down the top tightly and shake the kernels to cover the kernels in oil.  Microwave according to your microwave.

So, I followed the instructions exactly.  I also know that for our microwave we put the bag of popcorn in, turn it on 5 minutes and listen for the "pops" to slow down.

Well . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

it looked like something off of a movie.  All of a sudden I noticed popcorn flying everywhere inside my microwave.  Needless to say I have to work on the "technique" for this method of popcorn.  At the very least, I need to find the original "recipe" and read again.  Apparently there is something that I did incorrectly.  Stay tuned for correct instructions or either modifications that I make to perfect this.

It really should be a frugal alternative to pre-packaged microwave popcorn.

Edible Play Dough

Both of my daughters love play dough. They frequently get sets for birthdays or holidays. Here is a recipe for edible play dough. I like this idea because not only do they get play time but they get a little snack in the process.

1 cup peanut butter
1 cup nonfat dry milk
2/3 cup powdered sugar

Place peanut butter in a large bowl and begin working in both the dry milk and powdered sugar in small batches. Working it with your fingers works best. In the end the texture should be like play dough. :) If it is too sticky add more dry milk. If too dry, add more peanut butter. This will keep up to a week closed tightly in a plastic bag or container.

The kids can play with making different snack creations using pretzels, raisins, nuts, candies, etc.

Enjoy!!!

Onion Soup Mix

In our house, we like onion soup mix. We use ALOT of onion soup mix. . . chips and dip, pot roast, oven roasted potatoes, the list goes on and on. I was talking to my sister-in-law today and remembered my beloved homemade recipe that is so cheap to make.

Onion Soup Mix

3/4 cup instant minced onion
4 tsp. onion powder
1/3 cup beef bouillon powder
1/4 tsp. celery seed, crushed
1/4 tsp. sugar

Mix all ingredients and store in an airtight container.

To Use: Add 2 tablespoons mix to 1 cup boiling water. Cover and simmer 15 minutes.
Approximately 2 tbs equals 1 store bought packet.

In comparison, this is SO cheap. The cheapest I find the store bought packets is 2 pouches in a box for $1.00. I can make ALOT of mix for around $3-4 depending on sale prices.
